📋 How We Chose These Watches
We picked from the watches in our own database whose Amazon price was under $200 when we last checked, and kept only watches with a live Amazon product listing. We judged movement, power source, water resistance and build for the money, and picked one watch per job (all-rounder, dive, automatic, field, chronograph) rather than five similar watches. Every spec on this page is copied from that watch's spec sheet, which also feeds each watch page. We do not test watches; we compare published specifications. The Citizen Weekender Chronograph sits in the $150 to $250 price band but was under $200 when we last checked.

- ✓Stainless steel case
- ✓About a 3-year battery

Buying Guide
Under $200 is where solar becomes affordable: Casio Tough Solar (the CasiOak and the MTP-S120L) and Citizen Eco-Drive (the Garrison and the Weekender Chronograph) charge from light, so there is no battery to replace on a schedule. It is also the cheapest bracket for a Japanese automatic from a major maker: the Seiko 5 SNKL23 runs the 7S26, which has a 41-hour power reserve but does not hack or hand-wind. Water resistance varies widely: the CasiOak and the Duro are rated to 200m, the Garrison, the Weekender Chronograph and the Seiko SSB427 to 100m, and the SNKL23 only to 30m, so do not swim in it. Crystals at this price are mineral glass, Hardlex (Seiko's hardened mineral glass) or acrylic; sapphire starts around $250 with the Orient Mako 40, covered in our best watches under $300 guide. Other good watches under $200 in our database: the Casio MTP-S120L (Tough Solar field watch, 42mm, 100m), the Q Timex Reissue (38mm, rotating bezel, 50m) and the Seiko SSB427 Blue Panda quartz chronograph (41mm, 100m).

Frequently Asked Questions
The G-Shock CasiOak GA-B2100 ($100 to $150): shock resistant, 200m, Tough Solar and Bluetooth. For a dive watch, the Casio Duro; for an automatic, the Seiko 5 SNKL23; for a field watch with no battery, the Citizen Garrison; and for a chronograph, the Citizen Eco-Drive Weekender Chronograph.
The Seiko 5 SNKL23 (7S26 automatic, 37mm, $100 to $150) for a dress-leaning everyday watch, or the Invicta Pro Diver 8926OB (Seiko NH35 automatic, 40mm, 200m, $50 to $100) if you want a dive watch that hacks and hand-winds.
Solar, if you can. The CasiOak, Citizen Garrison, Citizen Weekender Chronograph and Casio MTP-S120L all charge from light, so there is no battery to replace on a schedule. The Casio Duro is the one battery watch we would still pick here, because nothing else this cheap is rated to 200m with a steel case.
Not among the watches in our database: everything under $200 here uses mineral glass, Hardlex or acrylic. The least expensive sapphire crystal in our database is on the Orient Mako 40, which was under $300 when we last checked.
The CasiOak GA-B2100 if you want solar, Bluetooth and an analogue face; the square DW-5600 if you want the classic digital G-Shock for less than $100. Both are rated to 200m.
