📋 How We Chose These Watches
We picked from the mechanical watches in our own database whose Amazon price was under $500 when we last checked, and kept only watches with a live Amazon product listing. We judged movement track record (and whether it hacks and hand-winds), crystal, water resistance and what each watch is for, and picked one watch per job rather than six similar ones. The Seiko Prospex Turtle sits right on the $500 line and is left out. Every spec on this page is copied from that watch's spec sheet, which also feeds each watch page. We do not test watches; we compare published specifications.

Buying Guide
The movements on this list, in plain terms. Seiko's 4R family (the 4R35 in the Samurai, the 4R34 GMT in the 5 Sports GMT, the 4R38 in the Open Heart, the 4R36 in the 5 Sports 5KX) all hack (the seconds hand stops when you set the time) and hand-wind, with a 41-hour power reserve. The older Seiko 7S26 in the SNKL23 does neither, but has the same 41 hours and a long reputation for durability. Citizen's 8210 (Tsuyosa) and Orient's F6722 (Mako 40) have a 40-hour power reserve. Any automatic gains or loses some seconds a day, more than a quartz watch, and needs a service every several years rather than a battery. Crystal is where the money shows: the Tsuyosa and Mako 40 have sapphire, while the Seikos use Hardlex, Seiko's hardened mineral glass. Check water resistance against how you live: the Samurai and Mako 40 are rated to 200m, the 5 Sports GMT to 100m, the Tsuyosa and Open Heart to 50m, and the SNKL23 to 30m. For more automatics chosen for their dials, see our best value watches under $500 guide, which covers the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time and the Bulova Surveyor.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Citizen Tsuyosa: Citizen's 8210 automatic, a sapphire crystal and an integrated bracelet. For diving, the Seiko Prospex Samurai SRPF03; for travel, the Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK001; for a dress watch, the Seiko Presage SSA425 Open Heart; for value, the Orient Mako 40; and on a tight budget, the Seiko 5 SNKL23.
Long-running Japanese calibres made in large numbers: Seiko's 4R35, 4R36, 4R38, 4R34 and 7S26, Citizen's 8210 and Orient's F6722. Parts are cheap and most watchmakers can service them.
Hacking means the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown out, so you can set the time to the second. Hand-winding means you can wind the movement with the crown instead of only by wearing it. Seiko's 4R movements and Orient's F6722 do both; the older Seiko 7S26 does neither.
Yes. Any automatic gains or loses some seconds a day, while a quartz watch drifts far less. Buy an automatic for the mechanism, not for timekeeping. If accuracy and no upkeep matter most, see our best solar watches guide.
Yes. In our database the Citizen Tsuyosa, Orient Mako 40, Orient Kamasu and Bulova Surveyor all pair an automatic movement with a sapphire crystal for under $500.
